Typical Raccoon Behaviors You Can Expect

As already mentioned, wild animals can be very unpredictable when it comes to behavior. This also includes raccoons. Although cute and furry-looking, raccoons can pose various threats to not only dogs and pets, but to humans too. It can’t be said for sure if the local raccoon colonies are likely to hurt, attack, or kill your dog. On the other hand, most wild animals will do anything it takes to defend them-selves if they feel threatened or are provoked in some way or another.

Furthermore, if mother raccoons are protecting their young, they are known to hiss, growl, claw, and bite whatever creature they think will harm their offspring.  If your curious dog (or cat) happens to stumble across a litter of kits (baby raccoons), it is very likely that the mother raccoon will feel threatened and attempt to scare your pet away by any means necessary.

Avoid Provoking Raccoons

They are not hostile by nature, so raccoons probably will not attack your dog for pure recreation or curiosity. In most raccoon attack cases, an animal or human unintentionally provoked a raccoon, causing it distress and scaring it into self-defense mode. If raccoons are visiting your property in a regular basis, it is best to take control of the situation so that your dog is safe from accidents and danger involving raccoons.

Implement Animal-Proofing Strategies Around Your Property

To avoid unsafe raccoon encounters, only let your dog out during the day. Raccoons are nocturnal and are more likely to be active in your yard at night rather than the day. Raccoons can carry diseases and use their claws and teeth to hurt your pets. Be sure your pet is protected by stopping a raccoon problem as soon as possible. Call an Indianapolis raccoon control company to get rid of raccoons with environmental modifications, raccoon traps, and other types of humane raccoon control strategies.

Facts About Raccoon Eating Habits

Raccoons are common visitors to metropolitan and residential communities. They are smart mammals that have a good memory and remember to go after what they know is accessible. Raccoons have learned that our neighborhoods and cities are perfect spots to grab an easy meal and perhaps some warm shelter as well. For this reason, raccoons have been labeled a nuisance animal in these areas.

Although raccoons are considered nuisance wildlife in urban areas, they are truly delightful critters with many interesting facts to offer. Maybe if you can recognize a raccoon’s diet, you might be able to understand what it is they are after when they trespass onto our properties. With this kind of knowledge, you can perhaps come to respect these mammals, and have a strategy to prevent them from invading your property in the future.

What Do Raccoons Eat?

Raccoons are opportunistic eaters. They are omnivores that eat many different varieties of plant life, invertebrates, and vertebrates. In nature, raccoons are fond of fish, frogs, nuts, acorns, berries, fruit, insects, worms, bird eggs, and even larger prey like birds, snakes, and lizards. With so many subspecies of raccoon in the world, their diets vary depending on the region in which they live. Raccoon species that live near ocean eat more shellfish and aquatic wildlife, in contrast to the Northern raccoon which feeds mostly on the foodstuffs we mentioned before.

Raccoons in Urban Areas

Raccoons that trespass onto residential and commercial properties are looking for anything and everything similar to the foods we just discussed. For those who like to take the garbage outside the night before trash pickup day, you might experience higher frequencies of raccoons to your property.

Leaving garbage outside is like giving raccoons, and other nocturnal wildlife, a free invitation to an all-you-can-eat buffet in your driveway. Not only does this habit attract nuisance wildlife, but it also leaves behind a huge mess for you to wake up to. And raccoons will remember your home as a means for food and return night after night looking for more hand-outs.

Raccoons Will Eat Your Other Animal Food

Raccoons also like to eat pet food, bird seed, and even squirrel seed. Properties with pet bowls outside, or even pet food in the garage, have a higher chance of experiencing problems with raccoons than properties that do not take part in such activities. Bird feeders and squirrel feeders are also a big attraction for raccoons. Removing these objects from a property with raccoons can greatly reduce their rate of return, and leave other raccoons disinterested in your home.

If you have a problem with nuisance raccoons, never try to trap or harm them on your own. It requires professional training, tools, and licensing to facilitate any type of raccoon removal service. Contact Indianapolis Raccoon Removal at 317-535-4605 for DNR licensed and insured critter control services for raccoons in Central, Indiana.

Learn About Raccoons and Rabies

The rumors of raccoons and the Ebola viruses being connected in some way mostly have to do with the comparisons made between Rabies and Ebola. Rabies is a common, life-threatening disease that is publicly linked to raccoons because raccoons, and bats, are species of mammals that most often carry the virus, or become infected with it. The reason why Rabies and Ebola have been discussed together is that they share a lot of similar qualities. Both viruses are nearly lethal for humans, and most certainly lethal for other animals, like dogs and cats.

Since they are equally dangerous, they are equally feared as well, giving them something else in common. Also, it is difficult to become infected by these viruses. Not only is the likelihood small, but the chances of coming in contact with such virus is rare. Unlike colds and flu viruses that can be spread through respiratory transmissions, a person, or animal, must have direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected subject. It cannot be contracted through a simple cough or sneeze. One major difference, on the other hand, is that Ebola has the capacity to evolve and change, whereas Rabies does not.

How to Manage Raccoons Around Your Area

A person should not be scared to contract the Ebola virus from a raccoon, considering there have been no reports of such events taking place. But people should always beware of raccoons because they commonly carry contagious and infectious diseases that can kill or injure a living being including pets. If you spot a raccoon on your property, contact an Indianapolis raccoon removal company for immediate service. It is strongly suggested for homes near wooded areas, or city areas, to raccoon-proof your property to avoid a raccoon problem in the future.

Not only do raccoons carry infectious diseases, but their saliva is also full of bacteria that can be extremely dangerous if it somehow enters your bloodstream, either through an existing open wound, eyes, or mouth. That is why it is important to immediately visit a nearby walk-in clinic or emergency room regardless of how minor you think your injuries may be. You may require vaccinations or medication to prevent illness and infection.

Attacks on Dogs and Cats

Pets like dogs and cats may come into contact with the wild raccoon and anytime. If they come in contact with the wrong raccoon, they could experience an attack as well. In fact, it is more common for dogs to be attacked by raccoons that it is for humans because dogs are curious and tend to provoke raccoons more than humans do.

In the case that your doctor is bitten or injured by a wild raccoon, you must immediately take them to your vet. If your veterinarian offices closed, take them to a 24 hour emergency veterinary clinic. An accident like this cannot wait till the next morning so be sure you use a 24 hour clinic is your vet offices closed.

Beware That Raccoons are Foraging for Fall in Indiana

For homes located in rural areas or near wooded areas, this season is all about pest control. One of the most common nuisance animals to watch out for in the fall time is the wild raccoon. Continue reading to learn more about raccoon activity this time of year, and what to expect from raccoons as crepuscular and nocturnal foragers.

Crepuscular and Nocturnal Foragers

This time of year, raccoons are looking for more than just food; they are also in search of dens and shelter to mate and breed their young. Generally, raccoons do most of their hunting and foraging at night, since they are nocturnal mammals. But now that temperatures are slowly becoming colder, raccoons will start to do their hunting and foraging earlier than before. The term, “crepuscular” simply refers to the twilight time before the sun fully sets. So when they are referred to as crepuscular foragers, it is being implied that they start their food hunt earlier in the evening than in spring and summer.

Some people are afraid when they spot raccoons out before the sun has set, since one of the most obvious signs of rabies is a raccoon out during the day. But twilight foraging is much different from daytime wandering, and does not indicate an infection at all. This does not mean you should attempt to touch or come into contact with a wild raccoon. Although they may be not be infected with rabies, they are known carriers of the virus, as well as, several other infection and unpleasant diseases.

If you are seeing raccoons on your property during twilight and evening hours, and they are beginning to become a threat to your property, it is time to call a local wildlife control company. They retain the proper tools and training to safely remove raccoons from interior areas of a property, as well as, inhibit raccoon trespassing and more. Be sure to choose a company that only uses non-lethal and humane methods of raccoon extraction and exclusion. And never attempt to trap, catch, or kill a raccoon under any circumstances.

How to Get Rid of Raccoons in a Suburban Neighborhood

It is common for property owners to be confronted with a raccoon problem at some point in time.  When home and building owners reach this dilemma, it is very crucial to act against them right away.  Raccoons can cause extensive damage to the structural makeup of a building or home, as well as destroy expensive landscaping and leave behind huge, embarrassing messes. Raccoons are known to be smart and intuitive, relentlessly finding ways to trespass onto or into a property for food and shelter.

It is up to the property owner to act and remove raccoons permanently, and they can do this through a variety of ways. Continue reading to learn how.

Raccoon Basics

Raccoons are from North America. They are a medium sized mammal, reaching anywhere from 15-30 inches in length, on average. Their weight averages between 10 and 20 pounds.  They are known for their nocturnal lifestyle, sleeping during the day, and feeding and breeding at night. Raccoons normally feed on fruits, nuts, small prey such as frogs and crayfish, and plants.

However, raccoons that hover and colonize near suburban communities and neighborhoods, feed on different things. They will roam neighborhood streets in search of compost stacks and trash cans and rip through garbage looking for edible scraps. You can spot these creatures by their signature markings.  They have a gray coat of fur with a black and gray striped tail.  They also look as if they are wearing a black bandit mask right over their eyes.

Outside of the domesticated areas of our communities and neighborhoods, raccoons nest and burrow underground or in hollow trees.  Sometimes they build their homes in brush piles or tree stumps.  However, on the other side of the fence, raccoons will often times intrude into homes or buildings in search of shelter. They can burrow under porches, in crawl spaces, rooftops, attics, and more.

Their presence results in many types of damages to roofs and structural components of the property. They leave a huge mess and cause extensive damage and odor from their urine and droppings. They can rip off roof shingles, tear through insulation, saturate sheetrock and wood, leave behind germs and diseases, and destroy flower beds and gardens. There is no end to the amount of damage a raccoon colony can cause.

Raccoon Removal and Control Methods

Raccoon exclusion comes in many varieties. Choosing the right method depends on the size of the job and the resources available to a person. Many people in the past have succumbed to electrical wiring and fences to keep raccoons from coming on their property. Others have tried raccoon traps and snares.  These are temporary treatments and will not prevent raccoons from invading forever.

The most effective way to treat a raccoon problem is by hiring a professional Indianapolis raccoon removal company. There are many ways to catch raccoons but only a professional company has the proper equipment and knowledge to remove raccoons safely and effectively. They can give property owners guidance on how to not attract pests in the future and implement actual methods and practices to ensure this.

Basic Facts Surrounding the Common Raccoon

Physical Description

Raccoons, scientifically Procyon Lotor, are medium-sized mammals with a gray coat of fur and a long striped tail.  They are often seen with a black stretch of fur directly over their eyes, giving them the look of wearing a bandit’s mask; hence the nickname, little bandits.  They usually weigh anywhere from 8 to 20 pounds, and stands at 1 to 2 feet, on its hind legs.  This is at full adult size.

Raccoons are also known as “little bandits” due to their curiosity and cleverness in residential areas.  They can snoop and tear through garbage cans and dumpsters looking for food, in the middle of the night, and never get caught.  People in these communities wake up to a huge mess in their lawn or drive-way!  This is what most people think of when you mention the word, raccoon.

Reproduction

Female raccoons give birth to litters of baby raccoons called “kits”.  Their gestation period ranges from a few months, or 65 days.  They usually have anywhere from 2 to 5 kits per litter.  After about nine weeks, the kits can eat solid food and even leave the den to explore.  They are eventually weaned completely by 16 weeks or so.  The mother shows them feeding grounds and dens, and the adolescent raccoons then split up and head off on their own.

Diet

For food, they will eat almost anything.  They are by far one of the most interesting omnivores known to man.  In certain times, they will munch on insects and worms, but will also eat fruits and nuts in other seasons.  They are even known to indulge in certain vertebrates like fish and frogs.  This diet is good for them, and must be, because raccoons have been known to also live a long time.

Life Expectancy

In captive, raccoons can live past 20 years of age!  However, in nature, there are more dangers and threats that affect the life span of a raccoon.  In the wild, raccoons only live on average 1 to 3 years.  They are in constant threat of predators, destroyed habitats, loss of food sources, and more.

Nuisance Raccoons

Raccoons are highly intelligent and ambitious mammals with dexterous paws. These traits makes it easy for raccoons to access our properties and generate a long list of possible damages. A big-time attraction for all raccoons is food, so trash cans are common targets. If you know raccoons are a problem in your neighborhood, it is wise to take certain preventative measures to keep raccoons away from trash cans, as well as, all other areas of your property.

Raccoons Carry Disease and Parasites

A scary fact about raccoons is that they are known carriers of several infectious and transmissible diseases, such as Rabies, Leptospirosis, Roundworm, Distemper, and many other viral infections. They are also common carriers of disgusting parasites and insects, including lice, mites, fleas, ticks, and worms. Not only are these diseases and implications transmissible to people, they can also transfer onto pets. This is one reasons why annual pet vaccinations are so important.

Raccoons Will Destroy Your Property

Raccoons have dexterous paws and long, sharp claws. These features, coupled with their high intelligence, gives them an advantage when it comes to access areas on our properties. Roofs, garages, sheds, porches, attics, walls, decks, tree houses, swimming pools, koi ponds, and more, are all common hangouts for raccoons. They cause a large amount of structural damage, and soil everything in sight with their urine and droppings. This can make a home or area of a home very unhygienic and dangerous for people and pets. Furthermore, they like to dig up lawns in search of grub worms, which will leave your landscaping looking like a war zone.

Raccoons Will Remember if Your Property

As mentioned, raccoons are very smart. One aspect of their intelligence is their memory. Unlike many other species of wildlife, raccoons will search out the best areas for food, water, and shelter, and they will remember these spots for a very long time. This is quite scary if your property contains attractions that raccoons like, because they will continue to come back, night after night, until those items are gone. So be sure to remove all food and water sources from your property if you have seen raccoons before. This includes pet dishes and bird baths, as well as, securing your trashcan lids.

What Does a Raccoon Eat?

Raccoon Removal and Control 317-535-4605

Raccoon Removal and Control 317-535-4605

It can get confusing trying to figure out exactly what a raccoon eats. This is because it all depends on where they live and how easily accessible food is to them. The truth is that a raccoon’s diet is largely determined by its location and natural habitat. For example, raccoons in urbanized areas will eat differently than a raccoon family in the wilderness. Raccoons are hunters and scavengers all at the same time; and will eat almost anything. In fact, you may be surprised to find out what kinds of food raccoons will eat. So long as they can get their paws on it, they will eat it.

Continue reading if you would like to learn more about different raccoon diets, food preferences, and eating habits.

Urbanized Raccoons

The term “urbanized raccoons” refers to raccoon colonies that live near cities, residential neighborhoods, and commercial districts. Homes, sheds, garages, patios, driveways, garbage cans, commercial offices, businesses, dumpsters, and more can all be common targets for raccoons looking for dinner in these areas. Such raccoons have adapted well over the years of increasing new construction and land developments. They use their dexterous paws and intelligence to get into places where food is abundant; such as the places mentioned before. With these skills, raccoons can acclimate and adapt to changing environments; making it easier to feed themselves and their colonies in any conditions. Obstacles such as closed doors, high shelving, stairs, and more are no match for their capabilities.

Raccoons look for food scraps in outdoor rural areas because they know they are a good source for meals. Dumpsters, garbage cans, and recycling bins are all eye-catchers to these night-time eaters. Also, city raccoons are known to find entry points into residential and commercial properties. They use attics, crawl spaces, patios, porches, decks, sheds, and more for shelter against harsh and cold weather, and for breeding as well. They are certainly capable of leaving behind quite a mess; often times, expensive repairs and foul leftovers of eating, breeding, and bathroom breaks.

Wilderness Raccoons

The palate of a raccoon that lives in the wild is much simpler. Out in the forests, woods, riversides, and meadows, raccoons use their natural hunting and gathering skills to eat. Fish is probably one of the main food sources for raccoons near natural bodies of water. This also includes any similar pond or river findings; such as crayfish, frogs, snakes, lizards, and more. When it comes to the forest, raccoons will not turn down good fruit, nuts, and meaty insects for a snack. Berries, acorns, mushrooms, and aome plant like are common choices for wild raccoons. When it comes to hunting in the forest, raccoons are also known to catch and eat rodents, squirrels, and even small birds and bird eggs!

Learn Some Interesting Facts About Wild Raccoons

Indiana Raccoon Removal and Control

Indiana Raccoon Removal and Control 317-535-4605

Raccoons have bad reputations in residential and suburban areas, and have left a bad taste in the mouths of commercial property owners as well. This is because wild raccoons are being forced to take shelter within our homes and buildings due to new construction and over-development of land and forests. They have a stigma for being nuisance animals because they are, unfortunately, bad house guests. They cause structural damages to roofs, ceilings, attics, insulation, electrical wiring, lawns, gardens, patios, and more. But they also pose several health risks that cannot be ignored. For this reason, preventative maintenance is important to protect your property from raccoons.

And although raccoons can be quite destructive, on a positive note, they are interesting animals to learn about. There is more to wild raccoons than the stereotype, which you will learn as you read on!

Raccoons Procyon Lotor

🐾 The Relation Between Raccoons and Rabies

The stereotype that all raccoons have rabies is inaccurate. In fact, the truth is all animals have the same chances of having or contracting rabies, just the same as raccoons. So insisting that all raccoons have rabies is the same as saying all wild animals have rabies. You never know when a wild animal has a disease, so you should never approach one, just in case. In most circumstances, a raccoon will be more afraid of humans and will most likely only attack if provoked or approached.

🐾 A Raccoon’s Diet

Raccoons are what we call omnivores. This means they eat meat and vegetables, as well as, fish and other small invertebrates, such as frogs. What many people don’t know is, raccoons are also prey to other larger animals, such as coyotes, bobcats, and sometimes domesticated dogs. Raccoons come out at night because they are nocturnal, which puts them at a higher risk of being preyed upon. For the most part, raccoons are pretty good at defending themselves and their young, which gives them an advantage when it comes to predators.

🐾 There are Various Raccoon Species Around the World

There are six species of raccoons known to mankind, whose existence resides all across the world. The six species are the Hilton Head Island raccoon, Florida raccoon, Matecumbe Bay raccoon, Alabama raccoon, Eastern Raccoon, and the Chesapeake Bay Raccoon. Each species has individual traits and characteristics that set them apart from one another. They all resemble each other in similar ways, but look completely different, region to region.

🐾 Raccoons Hibernate Might Dens

Raccoon families live in dens, or small cave-like holes in the ground. This is where they care for their young. Some raccoon species live in tree holes and other similar den-like homes; it all depends on the region they are from.
